Work permit for internship

Hi guys! I'm a student from Germany and I recently applied for a 6 week (unpaid) university-related internship in BC, starting in January. The employer already approved my application. Now all I need is a work permit.
The problem is that the IEC program is already closed to German citizens, so there's no way for me to get a Co-op visa that way. They open up the process again in March, which obviously is too late. I read that there's the possibility to get a co-op visa through an employer-specific Recognized Organization (RO). There was a list of different ROs, I've already contacted those that are of relevance to me. I haven't heard back from all of them yet, but one replied saying that aside from the fee I have to pay the employer also have to pay a fee of $1750 (plus the compliance fee). I doubt that my employer is willing to pay such an extensive fee. I expect the other organizations to demand a similar fee.
I also thought about just trying to apply for a regular work permit. The CIC website said I was eligible for a "normal" work permit, but it seems a bit strange for a 6 week unpaid internship. Anyways, they list a bunch of documents I need to provide to apply for a work permit including proof that I meet the requirements of the job I was offered. However I just want to do an internship and I'm stil a student, so I don't have a lot of work experience yet. In the job description they were looking for someone who speaks English, can work independently and in teams, has a positive attitude etc. - hardly anything that's easy to prove. I'm afraid they'll decline my application.

What options do I have - or better yet: do I have any options at all?? I really want to do this internship, it would be such an incredible opportunity for me.

Any advice is greatly appreciated!! Thank you all in advance

You only have two options. The working holiday visa, which as you've seen won't reopen until next year. Or a regular work permit supported by an approved LMIA which your employer would have to obtain.

Thank you for your answer. Seems like I'm pretty much screwed :/ I doubt that the LMIA would be approved, seeing I'm only an intern and still a student, without any high skills.

Yes - you're right about the LMIA. Even if your employer was willing to apply, it's probably not going to be approved.

Check with Canadian Consulate in your country. It is possible that you can get WP without LMIA. According to CIC, international students studying in Canada and doing co-op work placements or internships as part of their study program are exempt from LMIA requirement.

Irrelevant.

This doesn't apply to her. She didn't study in Canada (she completed her studies outside of Canada). These rules only apply to those who completed full time studies within Canada.

In fact, according to the following thread, CIC may issue wp for this purpose. Should be checked with Canadian Consulate first.

Wrong again.

First of all - all of the individuals in this thread who received co-op work permits attended school (specifically language school) in Canada to qualify for the work permits without LMIAs. Secondly, CIC has now shut down this loop hole and is no longer issuing work permits for language school students since language schools aren't recognized as designated learning institutions (DLIs).

Thanks for all the detailed infos.
Even though the application process is closed to German citizens already, as the quota has been reached, I was able to create a Kompass account and I am now on the waiting list. Do you think there's a chance I may still get a work permit, even if the process is closed? It seems as there are only 5 other people on the list before me. I will call the consulate in Germany just in case and see what they say later today. But I was just wondering if there's a chance I may get the permit through the waiting list, even if the regular process is closed to Germans.

Also I heard back from on of the ROs and it's not as expensive as expected. So this would be an alternative if they can assure I get a valid work permit.

Yes - there's certainly a chance the IEC may work out for you if you are that high on the waiting list.

I'm not sure what you mean by the RO's. Make sure this is a program that is listed on the official CIC web site and that it's not a scam. Typically you should only be paying fees to CIC - not anyone else.

That sounds great! So there may actually be a chance to still get the permit.
I've got another question concerning the application: It says on the CIC website that they are closing all categories and waiting lists on October 9th. As of right now I am on the waiting list and have completed the first information I had to fill out. However I can't complete the rest (provide all the documents etc), because that part of the application is still locked. I believe they only unlock it if I am taken off the waiting list, if I'm not mistaken. Do you happen to know whether being on the waiting list (and not being able to complete the rest of the application) until Oct 9th or if I have to complete EVERYTHING by then?

Also the RO is officially listed on the CIC website, so I think that would be ok

I don't know. You'll have to wait and see.
