Work permit extension while waiting for ITA

Hello Guys,

I have a express entry profile with 470 points currently and my work permit will expire in January since I don't think I will be getting an invitation by then I am planning to apply for a work permit(paper application) so that I can work here under implied status,from what I heard paper application takes like 5 to 6 months to process. So my concern is

1 - is this legally allowed ?
2 - If it is allowed how will I update my work permit application in case I get an invitation to apply for PR ?

if you get an ITA while you are on implied status you just going to have to mention that to cic and accept the ITA but you cannot count your experience while you are on implied status is what i think .
