work permit application when unemployed

Hi,
I have a job offer from a University in Canada and are trying to apply for a temporary work permit online. One of the documents required is a letter from my current employer, but I'm unemployed for a year now. There is no one in Germany or Vienna I could call for this information.
Does anyone know what to do in such a case?

Hi,

I don't really know if there is a way around. May be you could just write "Not applicable" and fill with some garbage accepted date.

But the fact is, if you are unemployed in your home country WHILE APPLYING, the chances of approval for a temp work permit are almost nil.

Reason is, the very first thing CIC is trying to gauge is, whether you would return to your home country upon expiry of your work permit (unless you find a legal way to stay). So being already on a good job in home country means you have strong ties and some thing worth coming back to - if things dont work out in Canada. If this is not the case, they suspect you would stay in Canada illegally. It is best in my opinion to find a job, and quote it before applying for work permit. If you recently left a job from some where, it is probably best to request them and indicate that "you are still employed" while apply to CIC.
