I have noticed many people are looking for a job or just at home unemployed while waiting..

well have you all thought about volunteer work? it will help build your resume, it would keep you busy, keep you out of the house and your spouse would not think that you are a big couch potato on the couch. Not to mention, its worthwhile, gives you satisfaction and is something that you can be proud off, you get acclimatized to the work environment, you get free training. And if you work for a bit, you can ask for a recommendation letter as well. So its a win-win! :)

So how does one get around not having a social insurance number? Some people can't volunteer without it.

volunteer work has nothing to do with a SIN card. It's unpaid work!

A Canadian organization or business cannot legally ask for your SIN unless you are employed with them.

I supervise volunteers in my job and confusedandscared is correct that you don't need a SIN to volunteer.

I think it is a great idea to volunteer and this can be done in many ways including organisations that assist new immigrants thus getting your "foot in the door" and creating networks of people you can draw on when the time comes to look for employment. It is all about networking!!! and volunteering is one of the best ways to do it!! Believe me I know, I got back into the workforce after volunteering for an organisation that liked me so much they created a position for me!

Maybe they can't ask for it, but many places won't accept a volunteer without a SIN. I've seen it. They say its for security/ background checks/ bla bla bla

Pretty much anything that people would not be normally paid to do (i.e. anything that is usually an un-paid / volunteer role).

It must depend on the sector. When I was trying to volunteer in a hospital, they had to do a background check on me. I think that's reasonable considering I would be working with people in vulnerable positions, even if I'm just carting around jello. Other places I have volunteered never asked for that kind of information.

I've been volunteering for a year now (and got other volunteer work last month). I love it and they love having me there. I have oppoturnity to meet new people, speak English and some people already offer me a part time job already.

Hopefully I'll get an Open Work Permit soon then I can work and get money ;)
