Hello,
Hope everyone is doing well.

I am registered to start my studies (first semester) at George Brown college this week but due to some personal reasons, I wish to withdraw from my program completely. How will this impact my status as a student in Canada?

TIA!

It depends. Why are you withdrawing? Are you starting a new program? Is it to start at another college? Are you going to return to the same school in the next session or you have an admission letter for another school?
If you are merely changing your program for the same winter session then there is no problem. If you are not changing your program that means you are withdrawing from school.
If you are going to start school in summer or fall 2021 make sure your study permit covers the period. and when you apply to extend your permit you must include an explanation letter.
However, if you withdraw that means that you lose your student status and you are not eligible to work. You may also be required to change your status to visitor pending when you return to school.

Thanks for the reply! I'm looking to withdraw from the program as I wish to apply for the PGWP extension announced by the government today. One of the conditions is that i need to maintain temporary resident status or apply for a restoration of status. so i was wondering if the study permit will be valid for 150 days if i withdraw from the course?

You have not really given a clear picture hence its difficult to understand your question.

How can you apply if you have not graduated? Have you graduated from a first program and how long was the program?

Will this be your first time applying for PGWP, if yes then its not an extension its an initial application.

Can you post the link where you got the information announced today.

I'm sorry, my bad. I have done a post-grad program before and got a 1 year PGWP which expired on 27th Nov 2020. I decided to pursue further studies and got a new study permit. But the announcement by the govt today makes it more feasible for me to apply for the work permit extension and i want to do that. Application start 27th Jan and the last date for withdrawal from college is 22nd Jan

I'm just confused about the best possible thing to do right now.

The announcement can be found here:

If you can put in the application before you withdraw that would be good.

You will need to switch to a designated DLI institution for next term or you will be in violation of your study permit and will need to leave Canada.

i wont be able to withdraw before the applications for work permit begin unfortunately.
Get an admission for summer or fall term then withdraw from this winter term. Your study permit will be valid but don't work. Once your work permit is extended, then you withdraw from the summer or fall term. Have you also considered applying for a visitors visa first. Processing time is currently 42 days. Then you can use the visitor's visa as your valid temporary status.
