Hi

My boyfriend will be qualified to apply for CEC in Nov. We are debating if he should apply it for me as well.

We have been dating for almost three years and living together for almost two years. We already get to the point of getting married soon. But because of this, we are thinking about getting married before he applys for CEC, so that i can be approved for PR as his spouse. However, if it will take a longer time and harder for his application, we may consider to get married in next year.

can somebody give us any ideas about this? basically two questions.
will it take longer to be approved if he applys with me as a spouse?
will it harder to be approved with me as a spouse?

thank you all!

1. It may or may not take longer... really depends on the processing times, how long background checks take, etc.

2. Eligibity requirements remain the same whether you are single or married. As long as neither of you is inadmissable on medical or security grounds, it should be relatively straight forward.

You are considered common-law spouses by CIC because you've lived together for at least one year. So he may apply and include you as his common-law spouse. You have to provide evidence of the common-law relationship e.g. joint mortgage/house lease, joint bank accounts, car leases, pictures, etc. Search this forum for more information on what kind of evidence you need.

Note that if he does not include you in his application, he can not sponsor you in the future. He could also be in trouble for misrepresentation if CIC finds out he has a partner that he didn't disclose.

Thank you for your reply. I just want to clarify that, so it will not take longer time than as he applys it as single, right? because his PGWP is exiprying in Aug next year, he doesn't really have time to re-apply.

And now I have another question, would it be easier that if we get married and provide the marriage certificate? beacuse I did some researches on it, we need to provide a lot of stuff if we apply it as common-law spouse.

I really appreciate your response!!

Dear, I don't know how long it will take(single vs married), but with the Buffalo office closing and files being assigned to other visa offices, it's safe to assume processing times may be longer than indicated on website. None of us has control over it.

A marriage certificate will eliminate the need for all the extra stuff required to proof a common-law relationship.
