Hello,

I am a Canadian citizen and I recently got married in India to an Indian girl. Right now I want to sponsor her to Canada but I am not currently employed, plus my income is low and I took social assistance from the government this past year because of an ankle injury. So considering my current situation is there way for me to sponsor my wife to Canada? What steps can I take to sponsor her?

hope to get some help from this forum which I would really appreciate.

Thanks a bunch..

If you were in receipt of welfare in the last year, then you would not be eligible as a sponsor. If you applied over 12 months from the date you were last reported to use social assistance, then you should be ok.

You are certain it was social assistance? Was the ankle injury a work injury?

what type of social assistance are you referring to? disability does not necessarily disqualify a sponsor. it's welfare assistance that does.

I had the same thought -- only my question regarding work related injury is WSIB ....

There is no requirement to be off of welfare for any minimum amount of time in order to apply for sponsorship. A person may apply as soon as they are off of welfare and would have no issues if they could show solid proof that they can now support themselves. It is recommended that those who have recently received welfare contact their welfare office to ensure that their name has been removed from the recipient list. There have been a few cases where a sponsor's name was still on the recipient list, so IRCC thought they were still receiving welfare and the app was delayed while the issue was sorted out.

12 months would mean it wouldn't show up in Option C or NoA...

It doesn't matter if it shows, as long as they aren't in receipt when the app is submitted and can prove their finances are stable enough that they won't need to return to welfare when they sponsor their spouse.

I'm on disability and was able to sponsor. It asks in the actual application under Sponsor Eligibility Assessment, "are you in receipt of social assistance for a reason other than disability?" My lawyer wanted to make sure the money I got wasn't social assistance. Don't know if that helps
