Why does it say on the cic website that "If you want to keep studying, you must apply to extend your permit at least 30 days before it expires."?

What are the 30 days for? Are we just not allowed to submit an application with less than 30 days remaining on our permit? Is that grounds for automatic refusal?

As you have to stop studying when your permit expires, this instruction is intended to try to help you avoid permit expiry.

How it plays with implied status - I believe it's mostly a strong encouragement.

But the average processing times are more than 30 days so for the most part if you've applied to extend your study permit close to before the 30 day period so like with let's say 35 days remaining chances are you'll get the approval after your current one expires. I just wasn't able to register in classes before now which is why I had to wait this long to apply for an extension and everywhere I look I keep seeing the 30 day thing but there was no reason given. I get what you mean though it does make sense.

It isn't grounds for automatic refusal, I applied for my study permit extension 14 days before my original permit expired due to personal reasons and I got approved with no issues.
However, it is recommended to apply almost 30 days before your original study permit expires so that in the case your extension gets refused, your original study permit wouldn't have expired and you can have enough time to apply again without having to stop studying and going through the process of restoring your status (honestly this is why I think the 30 day rule is there, I don't think there's any explicit reason available as to why it's there)

That is why it's there.

LoA, LoE, passport, digital photo, bank statements, CAQ(I'm studying in Québec), letter of explanation as to why I'm asking for an extension, and the IMM form (I don't remember its exact number).

However, they might require different documents from different people (my friend was requested documents that weren't requested from me) but I stated what is usually requested, so just follow what the website tells you.
