Who should notarize a client reference letter?

Hi Everyone,

So I may not be able to get a reference letter from my employer. And unfortunately I have never kept in touch with any of my colleagues so I'm resorting to my only option which is to ask some of my previous clients to write a reference letter for me. Now I understand it's necessary to have those notarized? if not necessary at least it should be better to.
But it seems in all similar situations people are advising for the person to collect the reference letter from their colleagues or client and notarize it themselves? shouldn't my client notarize it? isn't the whole point is for them to sign it in front of the notary public?
Please let me know, I'm a little confused about this whole notarization thing and couldn't find reliable answers online.

Thanks everybody. You guys are stars.

Ideally do not notarise it by yourself. That beats the whole purpose. If your client isn't willing to do it, get it notarised from a lawyer. That adds credibility. All the best.
