I am applying for a Citizenship Certificate for my son. He has a UK passport but was born to a Canadian father.

We have to get some documents certified for his application. His documents - passport, birth certificate etc are UK issued. I also have to supply a copy of my husband's Canadian birth certificate.

Where would I get them certified please? I'm not sure whether to approach the British Embassy or the Canadian Embassy/consulate here in the UAE.

Thank you.

I would suggest contacting the Canadian consulate. However, here's what the instructions state:

Certified copies

To have a photocopy of a document certified, an authorized person must compare the original document to the photocopy and must print the following on the photocopy:
•“I certify that this is a true copy of the original document”,
•the name of the original document,
•the date of the certification,
•his or her name,
•his or her official position or title, and
•his or her signature.

Who can certify copies?

Persons authorized to certify copies include the following:

In Canada:
•a commissioner of oaths authorized to certify documents
•a notary public
•a justice of the peace

Outside Canada:
•a judge
•a magistrate
•a notary public
•an officer of a court of justice
•a commissioner authorized to administer oaths in the country in which the person is living

Thanks.

I did see that info and thought of a NP at my local court but apparently they will only certify documents in Arabic.

I'll see if I can get hold of someone in the Canadian Consulate tomorrow and ask their opinion.

To get a citizenship certificate for your son, you will need his full birth certificate (listing your name as father) and your Canadian birth certificate. If you send the "official" certificates (not copies), as issued by the relevant government agencies in the U.K. and Canada, you don't need to have them certified. However, they will not be returned. It's only if you don't want to send the originals that you would require certified copies.

I certainly need to keep the originals of both birth certificates. I also have to send a copy of my son's passport and another form of ID so I have to make certified copies of those anyway.

You can try Eman Translations in Dubai. I'd got some translations done there and got them certified as well. It's in Nasser Square in Deira.

Ah, ok thanks. I'll give them a try and see if they can legally certify these documents.

Deira *weeps* :D
