When to apply for a Study Permit

Hi All,

I have a question about my friend's visa.

My friend is currently in the US and planning to study in Canada. He and his family is having Canadian Visiting visa. Could anyone please advise me if it is appropriate he coming to Canada with a Student visa or can he come on a visitor visa and then apply for a Study Permit while staying as a visitor?

what is the nationality of your friend, that is the important part? If your friend has a visit visa, then he/she does not need to get a study permit if the program is less than 6 months. Anything more than 6 months will require a study permit, for which your friend has to apply the study permit.

You have to show strong ties to your home country plus proof that you will return to your home country after your studies. Being in Canada or in a 3rd country makes getting accepted harder. If you are in Canada when you apply you have to send your application out if Canada.
