When should I apply for BOWP?

Hey guys,
My visa ends June 21st 2017, and my AOR was January 31st. Should I apply as soon as there is 4 months left on my visa, or hold out longer and see if I get PPR before?

Also, can I leave the country on a BOWP without nullifying it?

You should be able to apply as long as you have AOR and a valid status on a WP that is due to expire within 4 months;
