When open-work permit expires, can you switch to a Visitor Visa?

Hi there, if I am from U.S and on a open-work permit through a recognized organization, when the 1 year permit expires, can I automatically or manually switch to my 6-month visitor visa?

Do I need to leave the country and come back to activate that visitor visa? I heard it can be switched within Canada.

You need to apply to change your status to visitor prior to your current permit expiring. It is not automatic.
