My visitor's visa will expire on March 1, but I'm still waiting for my LMO (hopefully a positive LMO) so that I will not waste time & money to extend my tourist visa and just go straight to get work permit instead.
I was told that LMO takes 8 weeks to process and my employer-to-be received a letter from SC telling that her liscense number is needed. She immediately faxed it, hope it will not take SC another 8 weeks to update & issue my LMO.
Is it okay to apply an extension online, a week or couple of days before my visitor's visa expires?.....I'm really waiting for approved LMO before extending it but I don't want to be out of status after March 1.
Your reply will be highly appreciated, thanks! :)

Your visa will expire on March 1 , I think you should apply for an extension now, as soon as possible.

Thanks for your reply ashokcan! Will it be okay if I apply for extension of my visitor's visa and then apply again for a work visa (work permit) when my LMO is approved and comes before my visitor's visa expiration? I hope it will not matter even if the two applications (visitor's and work visa) are kinda overlapping....

Apply for extension of your visa. Its good if you get the LMO first. Visa dept. and LMO are two separate departments , so it does not matter.

I hope you realize that if you are visitor in Canada, you can't apply for a work permit through Vegreville? If you are eligible you will have to apply either at a Border POE or an overseas office.

I heard that before, thanks for bringing it up! I was told I have to exit the country but will it be ok if I go out of the border even if I don't have a U.S. visa? How long will it take for me to wait (in the border) from having a tourist visa converting to a work visa after LMO is positive and work permit is OK?
Thanks again!

Extend your stay as a visitor and once you have a positive LMO send your application package to the US. Hopefully you're not called for interview or if called for interview, you have a valid US visa. The border (port of entry) will issue you the work permit if you are able to obtain the work visa. Note when you send your WP/visa application to the US attach a copy of the receipt you paid proving you applied for an extension of your visit. Two days (couple of days) to send your application for extension is cutting it too close. Make allowances for delays and problems and make sure that you are sending a complete package (see the document checklist for what docs need to be sent)

Thanks for the info.! I thought I can just bring all the things needed at the border...(positive LMO, receipt of visitor extension, etc.) Do I need to do something else before going to the border (like you mentioned, sending the application package to the U.S.)?
It seems I need to know more....

Read the following from www.cic.gc.ca

Eligibility to apply as you enter Canada

You can apply for a work permit as you enter Canada, but only if you meet the following requirements:

you are temporary resident visa exempt and
your job does not need a labour market opinion from HRSDC (some exceptions apply) or
you hold a labour market opinion from HRSDC.

Initial work permit applications should be made at a visa office outside Canada. I think you're from the Philippines so you need to apply for a work visa before you can obtain your WP at the border. Also note that there are job types that need medicals before an approval can be obtained (health related, food related job types).

Send the application package to the US or process the application from the Philippines or where you have legal residency. I only suggested the US because it is the closest and processing times are shorter.

I'm a legal resident of Phils. but I worked first in the U.S. before coming here, but my U.S. visa got expired since I extended my stay here. I'd rather prefer to to send my application package in the U.S. and have my WP at the border since I have completed the requirements to work in a childcare center as an Early Childhood Educator (Ministry of Ed. certification, background check and TB test). I hope not to undergo any medical tests at all....
Thanks for your input, I appreciate it! ;)

Coming to Canada, was your point of origin the US?
