Looks like its differnet for differnet people. May be depending on case complexity.

What is the first step in hiring him?

Dear all,

It is highly recommended to hire a consultant based in your visa office, country.

Regards,
It is also highly recommended to make sure the consultant/lawyer is a members in good standing of the Canadian Society of Immigration Consultants and/or Canadian provincial or territorial law society.

I used to always see ads in the news for immigration consultants and after checking with CSIC found out there's only 1 member of CSIC in Egypt. Then after a lot of research i found out how some of the other consultants/lawyer scammed a lot of people by pretending to send the application which they never did.

My advice is check with CSIC first, then use the consultant only to monitor your case and help verifying documents, help fill forms, etc., but YOU do all the sending.

I would always recommend an immigration lawyer to newbies who are planning to send application for immigration to Canada. Consider these points:

1. What if you make a mistake while sending applications? A lawyer always double-checks
2. What if there is a flaw in your application? A good lawyer always finds a way out
3. What if you are denied? A good lawyer helps file for repeal
4. Lastly, some good consultants also help you get settled in Canada (for an additional charge)
