What's the difference between purpose of travel - other & letter of explanation?

Hello all,
I am applying for study permit online & applying for OWP for my wife. In her application there is a compulsory document required named Purpose of travel - other. Also there required an optional document with TRV named Letter of explanation. What's the difference between those?
Also in my application (Study permit) I have to provide letter of explanation(Optional). Should it be my SOP which I submitted in university during applying?
Please help.

I am in a similar situation like you application wise. I am also applying for study permit online and applying for OWP for my wife. Can you please guide me on the "purpose of travel - other" and "Letter of explanation" documents. What did you mention in both. How did you convince the CIC?
