Good evening! Me and my longtime boyfriend are planning to get married next year around May or June in our home country. I just arrived here as a permanent resident May this year. I'm quite confused as to what to do first. Let's say we get married already days after I arrive. What papers should I process first so I can sponsor him when I get back here? I was thinking of staying outside of Canada for a month for our wedding.

If your intended husband is going to stay in your home country, I would start gathering proof of your relationship as early as possible.

Okay thanks he's not planning to stay there. We're pretty eager to start a new life together here in Canada soon...hopefully.

Get your police check 1-2 months ahead of time. That seems to be the longest waiting time as far as documents needed. Some countries take a long time to get the proper police clearance, so check that out too. What country is your boyfriend from?

Just one item to mention - police certificates should be mailed quickly. I believe the cut off is six months and they are only valid for a year. If they expire during processing, you may have to get new ones for your boyfriend.

Just to make sure - have you lived together for at least 1 year ? because if that's the case, you are considered "common-law" under canadian immigration principles, and if you haven't declared your boyfriend ( as common-law) BEFORE you land as a PR, you will NEVER be able to sponsor him. Really hope it's not the case for you. Hope that you were "just" boyfriend/girlfriend and you never lived together for a year, because in that case you would be a serious trouble..
