Hi There!!

My spouse is a PhD student at Mcgill and i had applied visa. I have TRV valid till 2015. Now my company is filing for WP for 6 months project in Canada.I would like to know, if they file for WP will my existing TRV will be valid? Will they give validity of my WP as same as my TRV? Can i change my job in canada if my WP is valid for nxt 3 years.

Hi, in answer to your questions:

Yes, your TRV will still be valid till 2015.

2. Will they give validity of my WP as same as my TRV?
The validity of the WP depends on the duration of the job. So since you mentioned this is a 6 month project, you would get a 6 month WP.

3. Can i change my job in canada if my WP is valid for nxt 3 years.
It sounds like your company is arranging an intra-company transfer type of WP – if so, this means you'll have a closed WP and you can only work for them. To get another job, you would have to get a labour market opinion (LMO) from the new employer and then apply for a new WP. It would also be a closed work permit so you would be able to work for them only.

Have you considered that since your spouse is studying at a Canadian university, you're eligible for an open work permit? That's your best option if you want the flexibility to work for anyone of your choice. An open WP would be valid for the duration of your spouse's study permit. See the link below:
