I did IELTS but I imagine it's best to do the first one available and to get it out of the way.

Anyway, from what I understand the only real difference is that the speaking part of CELPIP is done with a computer and IELTS is done with an actual person.

I've done enough Rosetta Stone to know I'd prefer the latter.

I did CELPIP. My first language is English and I found it VERY distracting doing the speaking part on the computer with everyone around me also yabbering on. I don't know if IELTS is the same but just a word of warning.

I did IELTS and the speaking part was done with an actual person. What's good about it is you are in a room alone with the examiner, no distraction whatsoever beside the fact that you have to look at him/her when you are talking. Also all three of my IETS parts (reading, listening and writing) were done in a room with pen and paper.
Having said that I agree you should go which whatever is available first if you don't mind the difference mentioned above.

If you are good in English then you can take any one of them. However, IELTS is accepted by most of the country for immigration/study purpose. Whereas, CELPIP is only for Canada.

I'd choose ielts only because of that speaking part. I was really really nervous, and the examiner was really nice and helpful and calmed me down. He even gave me some hints using gestures..

The only thing that I found better in celpip is that computer counts words automatically when you do writing..

I took IELTS twice- the listening part can be tricky depending on how far you are sited from the audio-player.
The interview part was funny- the guy who was interviewing me forgot to turn on the recorder and 10 mins into the interview we had to start it all over again, with the same questions ;D
