What is considered "First Stage Approval" under express entry

Hi Everyone

I am looking to apply for permanent residency but it is unlikely that I will get through everything before my current work permit expires (currently in Canada on a work permit).

I understand that I can apply for an open work permit if I have "First Stage Approval". I am unsure what this is though. Is it when you have been placed in the express entry pool? Or is not until you have been given an invitation to apply.

Based on the research I have done I think that I can be in the pool before my work permit expires but not sure I would necessarily be invited to apply before that time.

Any clarification as to what "first stage approval" is would be much appreciated. I have researched to find the answer but haven't been able to find anything definitive thus far.

Best regards,
Nathan

Pre-Assessed..
I think you are referring to an AOR which is an acknowledgement of receipt that is obtained once you submit your application for permanent residency. How you get there:-
Step 1: Create an Express Entry Profile
Step 2: Wait for an ITA (Invitation to Apply)
Step 3: Submit your PR application
Step 4: Receive an AOR
Step 5: Submit your application for bridging open work permit based on the AOR received

Hey Thanks for your quick reply flavdcosta. Appreciate it.

So it's a bit further down the line than I thought. I don't think I have time to get to that stage before my current permit runs out.

Which I'm guessing would mean I would have to leave the country and come back when/if my PR application was approved? I heard somewhere that they don't encourage you to stay on a visitors permit whilst you wait for PR.
