What is Co-Op Work Permit ?

Dear All ,

I need to know about co-op work permit as i am applying for study permit this month my college ask me to submit co-op work permit application along with study permit but i have some concerns on that like

my course is 2 yrs diploma program on the ending of year 1 there is a optional co-op work option same with 2nd year but i need to know if i applied for work permit right away with study permit how its work can i take benefit of this work permit during my study time ?

Hi,

For some academic programs, work experience is part of the curriculum. Foreign students who wish to participate in a co-op or internship program must apply for a work permit as well as a study permit.

Since, you have 2 optional co-op 's at the end of 1st and 2nd year of your diploma program, you should apply for your co-op work permit, so that will receive the co-op work permit along with your study permit.

Co-op work permit allows you to work full time paid employment , pursuing an internship which is part of your academic course. (http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/study/work-coop.asp)

You cannot use co-op work permit while you are studying/attending classes. While studying, if you want to work, you will have to complete 6 months of actual studying in Canada, and then apply for an OCWP (Off Campus Work Permit), provided your college is a participating educational institute in OCWP program.
