What is a file number?

Hello,
After correspondence from CHC via an email for a go ahead with medicals, I now know my UCI and application number. However, for a case specific enquiry, even a file number(optional) is asked.
Is this file number same as application no? Is the file number normally known to an applicant?

1. File & Application number are same. It starts with a letter & followed by 9 numbers or letters (mix).
