What happens when passport is not in our hands?

Hi all,
I am a Federal Skilled worker applicant. I have received request letter from Visa office in New Delhi asking for medical reports, police clearance certificate, passport and RPRF demand draft.

I have few concerns over the processing time after I send my documents including the passport. If I send my passport, how long does visa office take to hand over my passport? In case my passport is required for emergency travel when my passport is not in my hand, how can I handle this?

Can someone clarify me? Urgent..

1. ND keeps the passports for months. If you need it to travel, then you request ND return it to you.
