What happens to my work permit if my extension application is refused?

I already have a work permit for the next six months and have applied for an extension. My question is, if my extension application is refused, will I still be able to work under my existing permit that expires in six months? Or will I lose my existing permit if the application is refused? Can you please provide me with a link from the immigration website?
