We landed this weekend and have a long list of items we will be importing as goods to follow in the coming months. We will be personally driving those items across the border in a Uhaul ourselves (like 99% of our stuff). What can we expect? Will they make us open each box and look at item per item? Obviously the big stuff like electronics and jewelry have serial numbers/pictures/receipts, etc that we put on the B4 and B4A forms so those can be expected, but what about like general household goods? For example we have a $30 sled we didn't specifically put on the form. Will they hassle us for that? Or can we just put it in a box with household goods?

Basically I am just trying to figure out how the importation process goes. We have lots of over-the-counter drugs and multi-vitamins, do they check those one by one? etc, etc.

This will help us organize how we pack it so thank you for your advice! Also one last question, how much time should we alot for this whole procedure? We live near a non-busy border (Vermont/Quebec) so I assume they have all the time in the world to go through our stuff if they wished...

assume that yes, they will open every box to confirm what's in it and make sure nothing illegal is there. you don't have to worry about the details of your list. either they will do a once over of the items in the uhaul, look through every box or not even bother looking. no one can tell you which way the officer will go. it is dependant on the officer and your situation. be prepared, but don't stress about needing to match specific items to your list. they aren't going to be concerned that you listed a box as containing "household goods" and not specifically stating what those items are. yes, i'd assume you will want to declare your prescription and over the counter medicine if they choose to search the vehicles. it's better to tell them upfront than to have them find them and question you about them.
