Waiting for work permit: can I leave and return to Canada?

Hey everyone! I am currently restoring my work permit and therefore have no status in Canada. My passport is expiring soon so I urgently need to leave the country to renew it.

Can I apply for trv or trp so I can return? I am waiting for lmia and also have AOR. Can anyone advice me please what I should do? I called cic and the call centre Rep said I can't apply for trv since I have no status ... But not sure if she is entirely correct. Hope someone can advice pls. Thanks.

1. The call centre is correct, you have no status so you can't apply for a TRV in Canada, you have to apply at an overseas office. Once you leave Canada, your restoration application is moot.
