Volunteer work for accomodation

Hey,
I am a UK citizen looking for information on volunteer work in Canada. I have found some positions where the general idea is you help out on a farm, guest house or hostel and get to stay in a room as the result. Do I need a visa for this as there is no exchange of money or goods, the only compensation is a bed to stay in?

Doing volunteer work in exchange for accommodation without a work permit is the equivalent of working illegally.

So yes - you need a work permit.
