I think it depends on the situation and reason. I had at least 40 visits totaling over 150 days in the last 4 years before I applied (maybe more). My visits were mostly family related (visiting family - I was born in the US) and visiting my then girlfriend and now wife (who I successfully sponsored to Canada).
