Visitor visas for parents of a Permanent Resident

Hey everyone.

I am in the process of becoming a PR. I am from Guatemala and we require a visa to visit Canada. My question relates to my parents. Will they have any practical benefit/advantage in case I obtain the PR? I am aware of the Super Visa for parents and grandparents. However, I am thinking more in terms of easiness to obtain the visa and shortening the process. I know that in my country obtaining the Canadian Visa can be difficult and I am only wondering if the PR will make (in any way) the process easier for my parents. Thank you for your help.

IMO, for regular TRVs, there wouldn’t be any advantage. In general, the application is judged on the applicant’s own personal merits and assets, and your PR status wouldn’t matter in your parents’ applications. In some cases, it might even be a disadvantage as it presents family ties in Canada (i.e overstay risk).

It’s really the privilege of the super visa where being a PR/citizen helps.

In that case, are Super Visas processed in any way faster than visitor visas? I am asking because I don't know if holding my parents to apply for their Visa until I get the PR

It would help if your parents apply for TRVs some months after you become a landed PR and you have settled in.

Two reasons for this:
1. Applying right now before you get your PR would make it seem like your parents are moving long-term with you (which is a negative).

2. If they apply when you are a PR/well-settled then their TRV validity is likely to be longer as compared to a short validity TRV for tourism purposes.

In any case, they would need to prove they are genuine, short stay visitors + good financial situation without depending on you too much + exceptionally strong ties to their home country
