Do I need to go to a Canadian empassy to get a visa stamp in my passport or just go to the border? I have a US passport and would like to know how long I can stay in Canada also I just got back from Thailand after 6 month stay will this be a problem to go into canada?

If you are American citizen then you can come to Canada without a visa. As to how long you are allowed to visit, that depends upon the POE officer. Normally, visitors are allowed 6 months visit.

Do you tell the POE you want to stay 6 months? Is it better to tell them a shorter time and then try to extend your visit in Canada?

Sometimes they do not even ask. If you're coming by car, you might just get waved in. Depends really upon the officer. Just relax when you come and be honest as to the purpose of your visit.

What about if you come by amtrack train from Seatle to Vancouver? Do they wave you in or stamp your passport?
