Hello, I am a guy who lives in Denmark, but have a Ugandan Passport, which is also the only one I have. I have got an offer for an internship through my school(in Denmark). And the Institution(Canada, Toronto) has given me the green light o come and work with them. I also have a contract/agreement. I won't be payed or anything.

So I want to ask if anyone knows whether I need a work permit or a a student visa, or a visitors visa.? My work will be from 1.september to January 24.

Thanks

You actually need a work permit even though you aren't going to be paid.

Before you can apply for the work permit the institution in Canada will have to obtain an approved Labour Market Opinion. Unfortunately it's typically extremely difficult to obtain an approved LMO for an unpaid internship. However if the insitution in Canada wants to try, they should start now. The process takes several months.

Explain more?? hmm ok.. I don't want to kill you softly with the story of my life. But I'll try make it short.

I have a permanent working permit here in DK. And I want to go and work as a social worker intern in an institution in toronto. And my school has approved, that I go and work there. And the institution (which has a collaboration with our school. the institution are actually getting paid to have max. 2 students from our school for that period)
This internship or practicum is obligatory for my school. I have to do it either internationally or nationally. So I chose internationally because I want to live in a multi-ethnic big city for a while, and leave this village I am living in. it is kinda filled with some discrimination and stuff. But anyway I read about canada and I thought I want to give it a try. And yea, I also want to experience REAL - Social work, which is misty met in Urban communities, such as big cities.
Theres a lot of things I can learn from a big city. especially how to deal with racism, etc.

So the Danish citizens don't need a visa to enter canada. but I need one because I am not carrying a Danish passport (for pride reasons, which are kinda time wasting in these type of circumstances , I know). And to be honest, english does confuse me a little bit. I don't know whether I am a resident in denmark or a citizen or none of those.. I only know I live here and I can go to some european countries apart from UK without a visa. As long as I have my permanent residence card. then I think I reside here. oh, my bad.

Anyway you understand now? thanks

But I also think I need a visitor visa. Anyone who knows anything else? I read a post on here by a another guy who was going to do an internship as well and he was told he only needed a visitors visa. Does it also take too long? or how long does it take. I am going to apply from London and I read somewhere that it only takes 11 days. Any truth to it?

Thanks :)

Ya. I got you. Your indend stay in Canada is less than 6 min. So you don't need a work permit.

I think visitor visa is okay.

All the best.

Regarding the visa processing time, it will vary from country to country.

Check www.CIC.GC.ca
