I just thought I would post our story on here as it may be relevant to some people. It is a little behind the times but the information is still relevant!

My Dutch girlfriend and I (Canadian citizen) have been together for 2 years and she moved over to be with me in August 2009 without any special visa as she is from a visa exempt country so she was allowed to stay for 6 months automatically. We were still debating how to go about the whole PR process by the time the 6 months rolled around and so we were in a bit a of a panic about what to do so that she could continue to stay here legally.

In the end, we decided to apply for a visitor visa extension of 6 months in order to give us more time together and eventually to be able to apply as common-law. We submitted all the required documentation along with an explanation of our situation and that our intent was to live together for a year so that we could apply as a common-law couple. I also provided some pay stubs from work along with a written letter explaining our situation from my end and stating that I was willing and able to continue to support her while she is in the country and can not work. We also provided some pictures and love letters we had from our travels and time apart.

I think that we went a bit overboard with the application but I wanted to ensure that we weren't hiding anything about our intent or situation and also felt that having that application on record may be of some use when we apply for PR.

In the end she was granted a visitor visa extension until September 1st, 2010 and now we're about to begin the PR application which will most likely be through the marriage route.

Just thought that this story may help someone do their application because I know this sort of info would have helped us when we were in a panic trying to ensure that she stayed in the country!
