hi all,

couple of questions about the application to extend stay in Canada as a visitor for my wife, who is a US citizen and first arrived in mid June 2016

i intend to file the application online, but as a first step i have looked over the paper application and had a few questions:

1. one of the questions asks about current country of residence, which is Canada obviously. It asks for the time period, as 'from date' 'to date'. The from date is easy as the date of entry. For application purposes, what would the 'to' date be. The date of filing the application (which is one month before her status expires), or is it the date on which her status expires? Or some other date?

2. on the details of visit to canada, it asks about how long plan to stay - the way i interpret this question is that from date would be from when her current visitor status expires, and to date would be essentially how long we are requesting an extension for - is that right? or do i use from date as the date of the application to extend? or from when she first got here (back in June) - or any other guidance?

3. the instruction guide referneces info needed for application:

Evidence on how you will support yourself or be supported in Canada and how you will pay for transportation to leave Canada, such as:

Guarantor’s letter
Bank statement indicating the account holder’s name and the account number
Details about your plans to leave Canada, particularly the date and time of departure and the means of transportation.

- regarding the guarantor letter, is there a template or sample that anyone can point me to?
- where would i indicate details about plans to leave Canada? its not on the application itself, so would I add in a separate sheet or something?
- regarding the bank statement, is there a certain amount of funds that should be

4. How long is reasonable extension to request? I believe 6 months is common, although we are planning to do her PR app at some point - but have not started as yet. She is going to live here and not move back (ideally) unless status expires or is otherwise required to. 1 year would seem to be a reach though - any thoughts?

Thanks everyone for your help. It is greatly appreciated.

1. The date her current status expires.

2. Yes, from the date her current status expires.

3. There is no sample. Just write that you will be supporting her and how. There is no certain amount of funds. Include some payslips to show you have incoming income and will be able to continue supporting her. As for the proof of leaving, it seems she doesn't plan to, so show proof that you are applying for PR instead.

4. If you can show you are applying for PR, it's fine to ask for a year.

Why have you waited to apply for PR? The process is extremely fast for Americans; had you applied in June, she would have most likely been a PR before the end of the year or possibly even already. I suggest you pay the PR fees now and include that receipt with the extension, then get the PR app submitted ASAP.

hate to spam, but a bit time sensitive (my fault) so hoping anyone with insight can help
Are you near a land crossing? I was exiting Canada daily for work and the two times I needed to renew mine, I did at the border on my way back home. Assuming it's a Visitor Record she has. The last time I got mine, they issued it long enough to get me through to receiving my Open Work Permit.

thank you both for replying

regarding delay in PR personal reasons have prevented it so far, but hope to do it soon

we are a few hours away from border - she does not have a visitor record as US does not require any visa or anything (her passport wasnt even stamped)

I advise against a border run. It is safer to apply online to extend her status. She is essentially living in Canada as a visitor and hasn't even applied for PR, so a CBSA officer may refuse her re-entry and even issue an 1 year Exclusion Order.
