All,

I just noticed the 30-day visa processing times at all consulates in the US. I need the visa by Jun 30th.
Can I visit the LA consulate and apply for it in-person? Will this still be subjected to 30-day processing?
Or am I better off sending it via Priority mail and wait it out?

Please help.

Thanks in advance.

If it's not a big trouble going to LA Consulate then go there in person. Good luck 8)

As per the LA consulate site, it says

IMPORTANT NOTICE: We are updating our computer software. As a result, applications submitted in March and April 2011 may take longer than usual to process. Until further notice, we will not offer same-day service. Thank you for your understanding.

Does this mean even if I go in-person it will take them 30 days to process?

They are updating their computer software, I'm sure they will fix it fast. Summer is very busy time for Visa department. Many staff go on vacation. They receive so much mail, so it takes time to read them . if you have time and badly need the visa soon then I advice you to go in person. 8)

Will there be an in-person interview or just an in-person submission?
I guess I am asking that since I have to apply the visa for my wife too and was wondering if I could drive down to LA just by myself.

Thx.

Well, as you are an Indian citizen, there won't be an in-person interview same day. Drive down to LA and submit your wife's application as well. Most probably they will call you within a week, depends on work load they have. This is the first time applying for visa from that Consulate?

Applying in person:
TRV:

Until further notice, we will not offer same-day processing.

Applications will be reviewed in 1 business day where possible.

Applying by mail:
TRV:

Applications will be reviewed within 10 business days.

They also want the application forms "validated", meaning the barcode appears on the page 5.

The latest processing times for TRVs in the US show 30 days. http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/times/temp/visitors.asp#west updated 20/05/11

Yup CIC's newest update is 30 days processing. LA updated their website May 10, 2011; they were optimistic they will be able to "review" the applications to the number of days as they have posted, probably not necessarily "finish" the processing :) CIC's current advisory is to apply 3 months before one plans to travel.

All,

Just thought I'd update the forum on my experience coz a lot of ppl. don't do that once they get their visa. Hoping this will help others.

After reading through the consulate's website and getting advice from all members here, I finally decided to fly in to LA and submit my applications in person. Reached the consulate early in the morning last Friday and was surprised when I was told that my passport will be sent back the next business day which was Tuesday (due to long weekend). And yesterday (Wed.) I received my passport with the stamped visa. I had submitted an Express Mail envelope. Also note that you can submit just one envelope if all passports are within the same family. I spoke to the guard there about the so-called 30-day processing period and he seemed surprised at that. He said its 1 day for in-person submissions and 10-days for mail-in submissions. I was a little mad on hearing that since I spent $500+ on air tickets and cab and a day off - for a $75 visa. But then its all good as I got the passport in time.
It does not seem to be bad in LA as per my experience but then YMMV

On a side note, the visa does not have my photo laminated. They just sent 1 photo back with the passport. Is this normal?

I am happy to know that you got the visa. :D I advised you earlier to visit in person. But did not know that you had fly to get down to LA. Returning your photo should be normal procedure, don't worry. Any way happy ending. 8)
