My son joined undergrad program in Sep at uni. I would like to visit him , and applying for Visitor Visa.

I am confused as to the supporting documents I need to submit because if I were Visiting Family or friends do I have to submit invitation letter from my son, who is only 18 years old and whom I am supporting financially and who lives in dorm, so getting an invitation letter from him does not make sense

or

As a tourist I submit detailed itinerary, which is not exactly the case as I am not a tourist, altho I will be visting places of local interest But I have not fixed itinerary. In this case case do I create an itinerary? I really dont want to book Hotel and tickets until the visa gets through.

Please advise.

You are visiting your son..... so 'Visiting Family'

He lives in Canada. He must/can invite you as your Canadian host. The fact that you support him financially is irrelevant for the invitation letter.

Even as a visiting family member, you can submit a detailed itinerary to prove you have the finances + a well-planned visit = better chances of getting a TRV

You do not have to book tickets. Provisional bookings will suffice

Can my son send me invitation letter as an email(instead of a separate document) from his official uni email address

Hi,

It's an invitation letter.... and he can email you a PDF version.

You'll find more inputs here: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/visit/letter.asp
