Hi,
i am a resident physician from italy, in canada as a visiting researcher (not clinical work), i orginally applied for IEC and received an "Open Work Permit" for 6 months. Since the research project i am working is still going on, i applied for a 6 months extension of IEC permit by paper mail, following this guide cic.gc.ca/english/work/extend/iec.asp but it got rejected due to missing payment of 155cad fee (Not requested in the guide for IEC extension).
Now my original work permit has expired, but a phone operator from CIC told me that i can still reapply within 90 days after expiry, paying a 200cad restoration fee and then the 155cad fee.
I have some questions:
- I heard some people cross the border to usa and then re-enter to get a new permit, is it true? how does that work exactly?
- Are there any LMIA exemption codes for my position? (they told me that i wont be able to fit within the 90 days frame if i have to wait for a LMIA)
- There's no way to restore IEC status?
- Since as a resident i technically am still an university student in italy, and my work here is similar to what grad students or phd do, would it be possible for me to apply now, in my situation, for a student permit instead? (i am not being paid any money by my canadian employer for my work right now, i still receive my scolarship from italy)
thanks
