Visiting Canada while applying for outland

My fiance is Australian, we have applied under common law (outland) as he was here living with me for over a year.
He left in march when his work visa expired. Our package just got sent off to the Mississauga office.
He is coming here end of September to visit. He has booked a round trip flight.
My questions:
- What does he say when he talks to customs? Our goal is to extend the visitors visa until he gets his residency.
- Will him visiting me here in Canada affect our application at all since we applied for Outland?

He tells them the truth: he has a common-law application for PR in process and he is returning to visit with his partner. He hopes to remain until such time as his PR is granted, but if it extends beyond the time he is allowed to stay or his ticket period and he is not given an extension, he will be returning to Australia.

He is still able to visit as a visa-exempt person, it doesn't matter that his application is being processed Outland.
