Hi, my son is planning to visit Canada under tourist visa (invitation by his father who has a resident/immigrant visa).
My question, if he decides to stay and study secondary level school, is it possible to change his visa to study permit?
Or if his father will apply for the family sponsorship, for our son to convert his tourist visa status to becoming a resident visa, possible?

If he wants to apply for a study permit, he will have to submit the application to the visa office responsible for his home country. He cannot apply through a visa office within Canada.

Whether his father can sponsor him for PR or not depends on a number of things. If he is 19 years or older - he cannot be sponsored. We would also need to know if he was included in his father's application as a dependent when his father immigrated to Canada.

The only thing I know is that he can apply for a study permit while being in Canada on a visitor visa.
I know several people who have done this before

Thanks Scylla ....... My son is turning 18 yrs old this year, and yes he is included in his fathers application as dependent when he migrated to Canada.
So u mean, his father can only sponsor him for a family sponsorship, as a dependent up to this year only... and after that my son can only apply for a tourist visa under his fathers invitation?
We are currently residing in Bahrain, I, under a working visa and my son under family visa.
Can we apply for a study permit/visa for Canada in Canadian consulate here Bahrain?

Scylla..... you mentioned, if he is 19 he cannot be sponsored anymore... but if he travels now under tourist visa, and got to Canada, he is only 18 yrs. old, does that mean he(father) can still apply for the sponsorship while his son is in Canada?

When was this? Pre-2015? CIC has become a bit more specific recently in who can and can't apply for a study permit from within Canada.

As long as his father submits the sponsorship application before your son turns 19, yes - he can be sponsored.

Scylla...thank u so much, but i just need to clear this out from my mind...
1 - He (father) is going to send an invitation to our son, to apply for a tourist visa. Thinking it will be easier and faster for our son to join him.
Is that right?
2 - He (father) can do the application of family sponsorship for his son, (who is turning 18 this August 2015), if and when our son is with him in Canada on the time of application?
3 - If he applies for the sponsorship, can he (son) legally stay and study while waiting for the result of the sponsorship application?
4 - Which is better to do, wait here for the grant of sponsorship or go there under tourist visa and apply for the sponsorship?
Thank you so much Scylla, you have been so much of help clearing my mind with this dilemma Im having now.
