Visit visa extension question

Can someone apply for visa extension if the entry visa has expired however, the visitor record is still valid?

To give you an example, if the entry visa is valid till 30th January, and the person comes to Canada on 28th January and is allowed to stay for up to 6 months(28th July), can he apply for extension before 28th July but after 30th January?

About 30 days before expiry (28/07/14) legally you can wait to the last day, as long as the extension application is received before the status expires.
