Hi Guys

I'm just after a quick bit of advice.

I'm a 23 year old British citizen and I've just finished University. I hoped to work in Canada for the 2013/14 winter ski season, but I've been told that there are no more visa's available for UK citizens, so would have to wait for the following season.

A friend of mine told me to just fly out there this month or next and try and secure a job out there and then go from there in terms of securing a visa and work permit. This sounds risky, and was just wandering if this is a feasible option for me? I obviously don't want to spend money on flights out there to then be told to return within a couple of weeks.

I would also love to live and find a professional career in Canada in the foreseeable future. If i were to fly out there this month/next month without a visa or work permit, is this a breach of Canadian Law, and would it affect my ability to work there in the future if I were turned away?

Is there also feasible way I can get out there this Summer to work, with an eye to stay during the Winter as well?

I would appreciate any advice.

Many thanks

In order to work in Canada, you need a work permit. In order to apply for a work permit, you need an approved Labour Market Opinion (LMO). This is something your employer must obtain. In order to obtain the approved LMO, the employer must advertise the job and prove they were unable to find a Canadian for the role. More information on LMOs can be found here:

http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/work/employers/lmo-basics.asp

If you had been able to obtain a working holiday visa - then no LMO would have been required. This is why this was the preferred route.

There is nothing stopping you from coming to Canada and looking for a job. However there's no guarantee your search will be successful (many employers aren't interested in going through the LMO process due to the amount of time and paperwork it takes - and the fact that there's no guarantee the LMO will be approved).
