Hi Everyone,

We just want to get some advice on what could be the best option for my wife to go here to Canada and apply for an Open Work Permit (OWP), here's our current scenario:

I currently hold a student visa that will expire on April 2024 and my last term in my master's degree is on April 2023 (June 2023 - tentative graduation/ convocation).
My wife's visitor visa was released a week ago and we plan that once she's here in Canada we will try to process/ apply for an OWP.

Note: Her OWP application result is not favorable to us which is why we applied for a visitor visa 6 months ago, and now we have her visitor visa.

Thank you.

Given your study permit expires within six months, she can apply for SOWP once you apply for PGWP with a skilled job offer.

Hi @Naturgrl,

Thank you for your response.

My study permit will expire on April 2024 but I will graduate this April 2023, I took summer classes so I can finish the 2yr program within 16 month period.

With this, should I apply for my wife’s OWP the same time as I apply for my PGWP? When applying for a PGWP you mean a job offer is needed? Thanks

She can only apply for an OWP once you have a job in NOC 0, A or B and 3 pay stubs and that you’ve applied for PGWP. A job offer is not enough. Realistically it may be close to a year before she has a WP if she comes to visit soon.
