Hello

I'm a British Citizen staying for 6 months as a visitor. I will be sending my PR application package off the beginning of August and am due to leave in November. I want to request a 12 month extension so hopefully it will be granted by September/ October.

1) Will I have any trouble getting a 12 month extension?
2) Will it cost/ if so how much and when do I submit the money for the extension?
3) What should be included in the letter, or if anyone has example of what they said in theirs?

Thanks

Hi, just a partial answer. More information here (I'm sure you've seen this page): http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/visit/extend/visa.asp

1) I don't know. I've heard it's more normal to request repeated 6-month extensions.
2) They recommend you apply for the extension 30 days before your time in Canada runs out. In theory, you can even apply just before your time runs out. The fee is $75.
3) I'm not certain, as we didn't need to do this. Your application should focus on the fact that you will be able to support yourself and/or be supported. You want them to believe you won't need to work in Canada to get by, and that you'll leave when you're required to. I think it's best to be honest that you've applied for PR and intend to stay in Canada with your spouse or partner for as long as you are permitted to while your application is being processed, but leave once you have to.

Since you're from a rich country, they'll tend to trust you, so you probably don't need to overdo it. Bank statements and proof of spouse's income are the best things here.

The instruction guide says this:

"What information do I need to apply for an extension of my temporary status?

Full details on why you want to stay longer;
Proof of identity;
Proof of current status in Canada;
Evidence on how you will support yourself or be supported in Canada and how you will pay for transportation to leave Canada, such as:
Guarantor’s letter
Bank statement indicating the account holder’s name and the account number
Details about your plans to leave Canada, particularly the date and time of departure and the means of transportation."

You can definitely ask for longer than 6 months. Many people who have submitted PR apps have received 1 year extensions, and some have gotten even longer than that. Include proof of the PR app, like your fee receipt, medical receipt or sponsor approval if you have it by then.

If that's the case, then it would make sense to base the length of stay requested on the expected processing times published on the CIC website at the time you submit the extension request.

I believe that's what most people do.
