Visa Extension + PR status confusion

Hi guys! So, I'm having lots of confusion on what I need to do to stay in Canada, legally.

First, a rundown of my situation: I'm a US citizen, I work online, and I've been in Canada for 142 days. I applied for PR at the beginning of December.

Heres the problem(s):
1.) I just found out that I am not supposed to apply for PR status from within Canada, unless you meet certain requirements (which I don't). Or rather, I applied for it with my Canadian address as opposed to my US address. I actually don't have a US address, but I can use a family members.
2.) My 180 days is almost up, so I either need to leave or apply for a visa extension.

I would ideally like to apply for the extension, since I have a vacation rental leased up until October 2015. But since I work online, and I already put in my permanent residency application, will this cause an issue?

Also, once they receive my application for PR (I assume they haven't, since it's not updated on the website) will I be asked to leave Canada? And what can I do to correct my application? I guess I also need to know: should I attempt to contact them about my PR application? Or will this result in me being asked to leave Canada sooner than I had hoped?

In addition, what if I need to leave Canada at some point between now - October. Will I be able to come back into Canada after that time, or will they find it suspicious?

What seems like the best way to go about this?
Any insight is appreciated, thank you in advance!

One more question, how many times are you allowed to apply for visa extension? Example: if I wanted to apply every 180 days until I get news on my PR.

I'm not sure what criteria you mean, did you apply inland or outland? Hopefully as a US citizen you applied outland, if so you can still remain in Canada while an outland application is processed. A lot of people get confused or bad information stating that they can't apply outland while being in Canada...you can and you just put your Canadian address which you said you had done you dont need to list a US address.

All you need to do is to apply for an extension to your visitor status. This is pretty straightforward and last I knew cost $100 and you can do it online. Make sure you do it before the end of your visitor status. You will have implied status until CIC get back to you so you would not have to leave Canada while they process your extension. As you have a PR app in process you will more than likely be granted an extension without problems.

Most US applications are going through in around 6 months (as long as you applied outland). There is lots more info on the family class sponsorship part of the forum with threads related to each visa office and spreadsheets tracking times for PR applications to go through.

Thank you for your response!!

I'm currently in the process of putting in a request to extend my visitor visa, so hopefully I will be approved.

As for the PR app. I'm not sure what you mean by "outland" or "inland"...? Is that a difference in places to send the application? I don't remember the application asking me to choose one or the other.

Actually, after you said that, I just went to check on the cic website, and I think I may have applied for the wrong thing entirely. I only applied for a permanent residency card. I think I needed to apply for the "self employed permanent residence" as well...

Please explain EXACTLY what you have done, as it currently makes no sense. You can't apply for a PR card until you are a permanent resident. Under which Immigration stream are you applying for permanent residence?

After reading your original post again I had somehow thought you had mentioned a Canadian girlfriend hence I thought you were applying for PR through family class sponsorship, which obviously you didnt. As Zardoz said you need to clarify what immigration option you have chosen to try and gain your PR as what you said isn't making much sense.
