Hi all,

I am a 29 year old female with a 30 year old brother. Our parents divorced when we were babies and our father emigrated to Canada. After 10 years he acquired canadian citizenship but we had lost touch for years. We have been in touch now the last 3 years, due to modern social networks!

I have tried to apply for the iec (working holiday visa) 2 years running and due to the limited places and overwhelming numbers of uk residents applying, I have not even been able to get my application in (there are 3 dates online at which the 'gates' open, once the quota is full it closes. A bit like buying Glastonbury tickets!) I am about to turn 30 so this would be my last year to try, and although they say 3rd time lucky, I am not hopeful.

I have emailed the embassy to ask advice on other options for Canadian visas or even citizenship. My father is now remarried and I have two sisters aged 7&9 who I would love to get to know. The embassy sent me a rather generic email back, which advised nothing. My father drove to the embassy in Victoria to try to obtain some advice and came away empty handed also. I then went to nanaimo to stay with my family for a month last year, whilst I was there we went into some government offices and were given a telephone number to call, and that again was a deadend.

Is it possible for my brother and I to obtain citizenship through our father? I am an accountant and my brother is a quantity surveyor . We both have outr dad's surname still and we both would like to emigrate to Canada.

Please offer some advice if you can, any suggestions would be grateful!

Thank you for taking the time to read this :)

I believe your father would not be able to "give" Canadian citizenship on children born before he became a citizen.

Also, he cannot sponsor children who are not dependents. (You would have to be under 22 or 19, I forgot which, in any case you are not his dependent.)

I guess the working holiday is your best bet? Or perhaps you could apply for PR on your own merits under a provincial program or Skilled Worker. You could check here to see if you are eligible to apply for PR as a skilled worker:

I'm not sure your father can help much. He can't sponsor you or your brother via Family Class. He acquired citizenship after both of you were born so there is no way to pass that on either. The only way he can help is if you try to immigrate on your own via some other class, you can get some points towards your application because you have a family member living in Canada and perhaps financially assist you. Sorry, I can't think of any other ideas. Perhaps some of the other senior experts can provide more suggestions to help you.

As kessio has mentioned, you don't have any venues to immigrating to Canada other than applying through your own merits. You cannot get Canadian citizenship through your father since he was not Canadian at time of your birth or your sibling's.

Due to your age, you are not considered to be his dependents either thus he cannot even sponsor you or your brother for PR sponsorship.

You would have had a chance for PR and eventual canadian citizenship had your father applied for dependent PR during his time as PR in Canada. You even had a chance when you turned 18 as he would not need your mother's permission for you to leave your country, if that was the issue in being denied to leave the country. But that boat has sailed long ago, you don't have any other chance for PR or Canadian citizenship except applying through CEC on your own merits.
