VF Missing

My Nephew has sent his passport by Fed Ex to VFS global in losangeles to get his visitor visa stamped and he received confirmation of receipt of passport at vfs.

But he received a status update Visa pending because "vf missing" Can anyone advise what does vf stands for?

Visa fee? I'm just guessing though.
