I have a valid visit visa for Canada and am in the process of receiving CoPR (PP at Ottawa). If I wish to travel back to USA (or some other destination) after my first landing on PR visa in Canada, can I re-enter Canada using an existing valid visit visa for Canada? This is assuming that I do not wait for my PR card in Canada and do not apply for PRTD (which is a bit time consuming, I read).

No, once you land as a PR, you temporary visa is no longer valid.
You can drive across the land border in a private vehicle with just your passport and CoPR after. PR card is needed only if you are taking public transport between Canada and US
If you are traveling anywhere else, you need either PR card or PRTD to return to Canada
