Hello experts.

I have a bit of a situation and not sure where to turn to, I would appreciate anything you may have.

Some background to start, I am from Canada and work for the Canadian Armed Forces, I now live in Ontario. My wife of 4 years is from the USA, Michigan to be exact, and has been staying with me in my residence back in Nova Scotia for almost 3 years by renewing tourist VISAs as we were having difficulties in figuring out immigration and costs involved. We have no dependents aside from 2 cats and nothing really tying us down to remain in that province.

Our situation stands now that I will be in this province unable to visit her on the East Coast for the next year because of my posting. And so here is where I have questions.

I want to begin family sponsorship to move her to Canada, since we will be apart for so long anyway we should make use of this time while I have the means to afford the paperwork costs. Can anyone provide me a list what forms are needed by us to be sent in? I would like for her to return to her family in MI while we process this sponsorship, should this happen, will she be able to come visit from MI to Ontario for short periods (ie: a week at a time) without any issues due to the length of the Tourist VISA she was on? If so, how soon would she be able to begin visiting me? (at this point I would very much like this option to work out since it's easier for her to travel 600km to come to me rather than 1600km) Please note though, she does not currently have any ties to the USA at this time because she has been staying with me for so long, so my concern is that she will not be allowed in at the border if she drives up. On that matter, while waiting on the family sponsorship VISA, is she allowed to visit? Does it help her case when coming to visit or does it cause any hindrance, given that the app could take well over a year? Should she look into a multi-entry VISA while waiting on family sponsorship? Are there other means I should be exploring to move her here easier than what I've mentioned?

I'm hoping it's all more straightforward than I'm making it sound. Any info is always appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Your questions are more appropriate for the Family Sponsorship section of the forum. I would post your questions there instead.

The immigration process is relatively straight forward. It's too bad you waited three years to apply. She could have easily had PR a couple of years ago.

The application most likely won't take well over a year. We've had a number of Americans complete the outland process in four months recently. 4-8 months is realistic.

Again, post your questions to the right section of the forum.
