Hello everyone,

My girlfriend (US) has been visiting me in Canada for the past month. Our original plan was for her to stay until the end of August, but we've decided that we'd like to extend her stay here. Is the six-month allowance automatic, or do we have to notify Immigration Services that she's staying for longer than the original planned date of her departure? And would staying beyond the original plan have any impact on our plan to apply for permanent residency through Family Class sponsorship?

Thanks!

It depends what was stamped in her passport (if anything) when she entered Canada. If there was just a normal entry stamp or no stamp - then she has been given a six month visit. If a specific date was written into her passport - that's the duration that was allowed.

like scylla said, if her passport wasn't stamped, then that entry is good for 6 months. Before that 6 mo. ends, and if she wants to stay for the entire process, she will need to apply for an extension to stay. Staying in canada as a visitor for the entire processing will have no effect on her application.
