American here. I'm currently trying to decide whether I want to apply for Spousal Sponsorship via Inland or Outland. I know Inland is much much slower but the chance of having an OWP would make that wait almost bearable. I've seen some people here mentioning that the Outland processing times have been very fast recently though, however the CIC site says the processing time is still 15 months. Has anyone applied for US Outland recently? Can you tell me a rough timeline for you? I'd really appreciate as many responses as possible so I can average up the time and hopefully make a more informed decision. Thanks for any help!

Check the CPC-Ottawa thread.

Also note that times posted on CIC website are worst case for bottom 20% of apps only. 80% of apps are finished quicker than what is posted. In other words, the outland times on CIC site are essentially useless to majority of applicants.

If you're from the US apply outland. Should not even consider the inland route.

someone just got approved in 2 months! Ottawa is processing US applications quickly right now. there is absolutely no reason to apply inland. that will just be setting yourself up for a long, frustrating process.

Thanks a lot, everyone!

But wow, only 2 months? That's amazing. Unfortunately, I can't apply now since I still need to wait for my FBI background check to be returned. But I think my case is pretty standard and there won't be any problems once I apply for sponsorship.

yeah, i know. it'll be interesting to see if that is a trend or an exception. either way, outland is still fast, averaging more like 5-8 months (most on the quicker end).

actually, you can submit your application without the FBI record, and make a note that it has been ordered and will be forwarded once received. that way, the sponsor's app can be processed and the applicant's application will be forwarded to the visa office to wait in queue for processing. CIC understands it takes a while for FBI records these days, so they don't consider an application incomplete if it's not submitted upfront. if they start processing the app before the FBI record is ready, they will hold the application until it's submitted.

If I were to do that, is there an address available where I could send it? Or would I need to wait for a request from the office?

The sponsor approval letter will most likely have the information as to how to send it to the visa office. Also, you can always wait until it's requested and instructions will be provided then. this is very common these days.
