I left Canada 4 months ago, after 7 years on a combination of study, work and visitor record permits, because I still hadn't crossed the CRS threshold, and was unable to secure work at the expiration of my last work permit. I haven't established myself back in the US yet, and all my banking, etc is still set up in Canada, as I've been trying to find work that could bring me back, and am still hoping for an ITA, so I haven't totally closed the doors that I'd established; I'd hoped to make a quicker return.
I'm making a visit to Canada to see friends, which I didn't think would be an issue, but have become a bit paranoid that they might refuse me at the border, seeing that I don't currently have much other than return flight to prove I'm not a risk of overstaying, given all my ties to Canada and expressed interested in immigrating permanently, combined with my lack of evidence of substantial US ties, at the moment. I've been staying with family as I get my bearings.

I'm curious if anyone has had experience of being denied entry due to being in the Express Entry pool. I'm preparing myself for some extra questions and I want to make sure they are confident that I'm there for a visit and that I'm by the books.

Being in the EE pool isn't the issue. The issues are your strong ties to Canada, lack of any ties to the US and the fact that you lived here for 7 years and have only been gone for 4 months. I suggest you remain in the US longer to re-establish yourself, get a job, transfer money/assets, get a place to live etc.
